Vonage delivers new Time to Call app for iOS

Internet phone company Vonage has a new iOS releases app called Time-to-Call allows you to make calls over the Internet from your iPhone or iPod touch. It works with both WiFi and 3G, but 3G function is currently exclusive to the U.S. and Canada.

Time to Call is free with your first 15 minutes of talk time and 190 different countries, but that promotion is a limited time offer. After the trial period, the price is for a 15-minute international call to a flat rate of 1.99 or less, by 100 countries.

The prices are higher for the 90 other countries can call Time to reach, with prices of $ 2.99 to $ 9.99. You can discover more country-specific prices by Vonage, the new Web tool.

Overall, the prices seem to be a little higher than Skype's rates, which start at $ 0.02 per minute for domestic and international calls.

But a particularly handy feature of time-to-Call is that it bills directly through iTunes, rather than his own client or a third party site such as PayPal. Also for a limited time unused minutes can be used for further discussions (also known as a rollover.)

Samsung to launch a 5.3 inch tablet/phone

There’s a thin line between a smartphone and a tablet these days. And I’m not entirely sure which side the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Q falls on. According to a report out of Korea, Samsung is preparing to launch a device with a 5.3 inch screen that will fall somewhere in between the company’s Galaxy S line of smartphones and Galaxy Tab line of 7 to 10 inch tablets.

According to the report Samsung will introduce at the IFA trade show in Berlin in September.

A device with a 5.3 inch display might be a little large to fit in your pocket, but it’s definitely more portable than the company’s larger tablets — while still offering a bigger screen for watching videos, playing games, or surfing the web.

Unfortunately there’s no information available at the moment about the screen resolution, processor, or operating system — although Android seems like a safe bet.

Samsung has also introduced a line of Galaxy Player devices with 4 and 5 inch screens recently. These devices also blur the lines between phones and tablets by offering many of the features of a phone (including a relatively small size) without the phone capabilities.

But let’s face it — at this point, consumer tablets and smartphones tend to have similar processors, storage capacities, touchscreen technologies, and even operating systems. The only real difference is that phones make phone calls. It’ll be interesting to see whether Samsung positions the Galaxy Q as a phone or a tablet… but my guess is if it makes calls people will call it a phone. If not, then it’s a tablet. David Beckam Site Hacked

Pop star and fashion icon for the terminally dim David Beckham had his site, which was dedicated to his peripheral interest in English football hacked on Sunday. The hacker changed the website to display a picture of a dog attempting to eat an advertisement for dog food, and a message saying “ScooterDAshooter = FAIL”.

John Stock, senior security consultant at vulnerability management specialist Outpost24, said that celebs were getting hit a lot by hackers these days. Recent attacks have also targeted Amy Winehouse and Ronaldhino, suggesting that casual e-vandalism is de rigeur in hacking circles for gaining some cheap publicity and notoriety.

He said that it is only a matter of time before criminals use celebrity websites to distribute malware to unsuspecting visitors. If this hacker had chosen to place malware on Beckham’s site the implications could have been highly embarrassing, especially with the recent news of the birth of Harper Seven likely to lead to a spike in visitor numbers.

Now everyone knows that Beckham is not in charge of his website. In fact he probably was told about it by his wife, but who ever allowed the site to be defaced should be given a red card, Stock said. [Source: fudzilla.com]

Canonical Release Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot 2nd Alpha

Canonical has released the second alpha of Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. The next major version of the popular Linux distribution is due out in October, but you can test an early build today.

Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha 2 look a lot like Ubuntu 11.04, the latest stable release. That’s because they both use the Unity desktop manager which has caused a bit of a divide in the Ubuntu community due to its dramatically different look and feel from… well, everything that came before.

But there are a few pretty noticeable changes. For instance Mozilla Thunderbird is now the default email client instead of Evolution. The Firefox 5.0 web browser comes preloaded, and the operating system is based on the Linux 3.0 kernel.

Canonical has also added the Déjà Dup backup utility and a new login manager, among other changes. There will be another alpha release and a few beta releases before Ubuntu 11.10 officially launches on October 13th.  [Source: liliputing.com]
