Asus Eee PC X101H netbook hits the FCC

The Asus Eee PC X101 is a $200 netbook designed to use an 8GB solid state disk and run MeeGo Linux. Asus plans to launch the mini-laptop in the US later this summer. But the company is also working on a slightly different version called the Eee PC X101H which will have a higher capacity hard drive and Windows operating system. Last I’d heard Asus had no plans to offer that model in the US, but it showed up at the FCC web site today.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that Asus will be bringing this model to the States. Sometimes companies apply for FCC certification for devices just in case they might later want to launch those gadgets in the US.

Asus has posted a user manual and a number of photos to the FCC. There’s no information about the operating system or software, but the laptop clearly has a Windows key for launching the Start Menu.

The laptop has 2 USB ports, an SD card slot, an Ethernet jack, and a VGA port.

The photos also show a removable battery and RAM access panel, so users should be able to make some upgrades without opening up the case and voiding the warranty. Asus tells me that the Eee PC X101 will only be sold with a 3 cell battery in the US, but the X101 and X101H can also work with a 6 cell battery.

You might want to take the photos with a grain of salt though, since several show a model number of 900A. I suspect Asus just slapped an old sticker on this prototype, but the Asus Eee PC 900A is a netbook with an 8.9 inch display that was released in 2008. [Source: liliputing.com]

Pre-order: Samsung NC215s solar netbook at $399 & NC110 at $329

It's hard to forget a face like this one, and if Samsung's NC215s solar netbook has been tickling your brain for the past few weeks, you'll likely be delighted to hear that you can pre-order one now for $399.

We'd actually not heard yet of Sammy's plans to ship this thing here in North America, but it's fairly clear that Amazon intends to hawk it -- complete with an Atom N570 CPU, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, 1GB of DDR3 memory, 25GB HDD and Windows 7 Starter. If you're not exactly keen on ponying up for the solar panel, the otherwise similar NC110 has also popped up in pre-sale fashion, with $329 getting you in line for that one. Per usual, tap those links below to do the deed(s). [Source: engadget.com]

MSI New X460 Ultrathin X-Slim series Notebook

MSI has rolled out a new X-Slim series 14-inch lappie with a sleek design and some Intel Inside stickers.

The X460 is just 22mm thick and it weighs in at under 2kg, which is rather impressive for a 14-incher. It is powered by Intel Core i5-2410M or Core i7-2630QM processors and it can be equipped with up to 8GB of memory.

In addition to integrated HD 3000 graphics, MSI will gladly sell you the optional Geforce GT 540M discrete card, which should be more than enough for some casual gaming on the 1366x768 screen.

The X460 also boasts two USB 3.0 ports along with a lone USB 2.0 port, Bluetooth 3.0, VGA, HDMI, LAN, WLAN and THX sound. It seems like a well balanced all-rounder, provided MSI doesn’t go wild with the pricing. [Source: fudzilla.com]

Toshiba unveiled Qosmio F750, Glasses-free 3D laptop Hands-on

Toshiba just unveiled what it claims is the world's first glasses-free 3D laptop, the Qosmio F750. It's a heavy-set beast dedicated to gaming and movies, with a 15.6-inch Full HD lenticular screen that can display 2D and 3D simultaneously in separate windows. It also rocks an HD webcam that follows your movements and adjusts the 3D effect accordingly, so you can peek at the that lovely third dimension from almost any angle you like. Innovative stuff indeed, but we were underwhelmed when we caught a glimpse of Toshiba's concept model back in January. So, has the technology improved since then? Check out our hands-on impressions and video after the break.

The laptop we played with was still technically pre-release, but the official release is in early August so the hardware must be pretty final. This includes some powerful innards, befitting the £1300 ($2100) price tag: an Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia Geforce GT540M graphics, "distortion-free" Harmon Kardon speakers, a BDXL drive, plus a USB 3.0 port and two of the USB 2.0 variety. HDMI and VGA outputs were also in attendance, along with an input for a co-axial aerial, which we were told would be "capped off" in the final European model. You'll find complete specs in the PR below.

The software was less production-ready, and we were only able to watch a few 3D video clips that Toshiba had loaded on there. It would have been great to see how an off-the-shelf 3D Blu-ray disc performed, and try our hand at a few 3D games, but alas that will have to wait until we do a full review. Also, we were unable to the see the simultaneous 2D/3D in action, for example by running a 3D movie in one window while browsing 2D content in another window. Nevertheless, the videos we saw were pretty mouthwatering -- at least once our eyes and brain adjusted to the 3D effect.

The eye-tracking system was remarkably quick and refused to be fooled by the sharp movements and embarrassing head-bops we threw at it. However, the adjustment of the 3D effect was slower to catch up. Even a relatively small head movement caused the 3D effect to falter momentarily before settling again. However, we think the system could cope with normal movements while watching a movie, and gaming tends to have the user transfixed in a single spot anyway -- and it was infinitely better than what we saw in the concept model. It's important to note that the system can only cater for one viewer at a time -- this is the major downside of the glasses-free tech employed here. You won't be able to watch a 3D movie with your buddy on a flight, for example, but that's the price you pay for not having to wear funny specs. [Source: EnGadget.com]

Lenovo launched first Fusion, ThinkPad X121e

Lenovo has launched its first Fusion powered ThinkPad, the X121e based on the E-350 APU.

The business oriented 11.6-incher features a traditionally understated design and it is the only Fusion notebook in its class with a matte WXGA screen. Lenovo included 4GB of memory and 320GB of storage in the mix, along with three USB ports, WLAN/Bluetooth, HDMI and a card reader.

In addition to the multi-touch trackpad, it features ThinkPad’s trademark TrackPoint and a chiclet keyboard. It weighs 1.5kg with a 6-cell power pack and the asking price is €379, which sounds rather reasonable.

It seems like a very nice successor to the AMD Neo-based X100e, but it also has two minor downsides. No operating system is included in the price and it is still not available in retail. [Source: fudzilla.com]
